Okay, so brother-blog A Glint in the Void is covering the PS3 launch, so I’ll take over Nintendo duties. No one is covering that punk-ass XBox shit.
Well, what I’ve seen of the Revolution, the next Nintendo console, doesn’t really impress me much. All they showed off was a protoype, not a final design, and the games they announced were all stuff like “We’re going to be bold and break new ground, do things that have never been done before! So, the games that are coming out are Metroid, Mario, Mario Party, Pokemon, and Zelda!”
Don’t get me wrong, I loves me some Zelda, Metroid, and Mario, but, honestly, it’s hard for me to keep getting excited over them. One interesting thing mentioned by the Nintendo folks is that the Revolution is designd to be a ‘virtual console’, whatever that means, and that it will be able to download ‘20 years of Nintendo content’. I’m assuming that means some sort of online download subscription service to buy classic Nintendo games. That’s right, they’re gonna make you pay for Super Mario Brothers *again*. Fuckin’ brilliant.
On the other hand, hey, online mutliplayer Super Smash Bros. 
What’s *really* got me turned on, though, is the announcement of the Nintendo Micro. From Gizmodo:
just a “hair bigger than an iPod mini.” It plays all GBA games. Tiny, bright screen, coming in the fall. It looks tiny and awesome and wonderful and I want to have its babies.

Behold the glorious Penguin Regina! As to the matter at hand: first of all, there is no need to cover the Xbox thing because there will only be one franchise worth watching on it and that’s the KOTOR games, so who cares. Secondly, I want to congratulate Nintendo on the ever-forward-thinking and original games that it always offers for its consoles; however, the machine (as usual) looks like a promising piece of hardware thats going to be completely underdeveloped for (like the GBA, the Gamecube…) So to sum up: Nintendo Micro is in fact t3h cuteness, I imight get one if it’s cheap & I must say it looks a whole lot better than that monstruous DS thing. If only they’d give us an Animal Crossing title on it….
Nintendo Revolution
I agree with this blogger: hard to get too excited about the new Nintendo box when they trot out the same old games….
I’m not exactly jazzed about the Revolution. I mean, yeah, eventually I’ll buy one, but it probably has less to do with wanting to play the next-generation’s next iterations of Nintendo franchises — heh, that rhymed — and more with the possibilities that 20 years of Ninetendo content in dowloadable form inspires in me. Of course, I could just as easily get my fix of that giddy notion with a ZSNES and some ROMs, and save myself about $200. Color me unimpressed and noncommittal.
But the Nintendo Micro is another story… THAT looks fucking awesome.
Well if KOTOR 3 is anything like KOTOR 2, then we don’t have to follow that franchise either. What’s really interesting about the new X-Box is the new features that Live will be sporting, hopefully the other companies will learn from MS and apply all those features to their multi-player software and we can have all that gooey multi-player goodness with good games.
Whatever happened to multi-taps, I wonder?
Well, the advantage of online multiplayer is that you can play with folks outside of your immediate geographic are,a you don’t have to plan it and set aside time weeks in advance, everybody gets a full size screen rather than just a quarter of the main one, and, of course, you can play in your underwear and no one knows. The camraderie created in a guild for a good MMORPG is good stuff.
On the other hand, it’s always fun to get together and play with folks in the same room, but to me that’s more for the ‘hanging out with friends’ factor. If I’m gonna play a game, I prefer to do it online, or at best, in a LAN party, where I have my own full screen.
To be honest, though, I’m not nearly enough into the online play in general for the XBox Live stuff to matter to me at all. The only buddy lists, rankings, and chat options that matter to me are the ones in my MMORPG of choice, and I get those just fine on my PC. At the end of the day, my main thing against the XBox, and what I’ve seen so far of the 360, is that there’s nothing truly compelling on them that I can’t get on my PC with better graphics. I don’t give a shit about sports games, and the few RPG’s that have come out for it that look interesting are coming out for the PC as well. Even the two big powerhouses in XBox FPS and RPG’s, Halo and Fable, are either out for PC allready (in the case of Halo, and everyone who played the PC version said it was hands down superior to the XBox version), or is coming out soon (in the case of Fable).
KOTOR? Out for PC as well. No need to buy an XBox for it. FFXI is coming out for the XBox 360? It’s been out for over a year for the PC, and with better graphics than the 360, plus a more comfortable control interface as well. There’s really nothing compelling there about the current XBox, or the 360, for me.
The PS3, on the other hand, is a whole other story… *drool*
Well said, foo’. Totally agree with you on the 360 stance. However, now that Final Fantasy creator and long-time series composer, Hironobu Sakaguchi and Nobuo Uematsu (respectively) have created that Mistwalker studio with the express purpose of providing 360-exclusive Japanese-RPG content, I suspect that I’m gonna have to swallow my bile and buy the fucking thing. Unlike the PS3, which I’m looking forward to quite earnestly, despite the fact that I’m forcefully reminding myself of how Sony consoles seldom deliver on their massive, massive hype… my own sick erotic fervor for the PS2 nonwithstanding.
