Wardriving on New Year’s Eve
So, seeing as I’m not doing anything for New Year’s Eve (long story, not particularly pleasant), I went wardriving for a while today. Well, technically I went to buy some fast food since I really didn’t feel like cooking or doing dishes tonight, I’m depressed enough about my lack of achievements in 2005 as it is. While I drove, I decided to experiment with Glitch’s newly-acquired WiFi card, so I plugged Glitch into the car charger, and booted up WiFiFoFum, and left it running while I drove over to the local fast food joint. I was quite amused as Glitch merrily beeped to itself whenever it encountered a wireless network. When I was all done, I checked the log, and it had seen around 30 wifi networks, about 1/3 of those completely open for access! Not too shabby for a semi-rural area and not having gone into any of the more populated neighborhoods. Saw a lot of the locked-down 2WIRE-XX modems that PRTC, the local DSL provider, distributes, but they were usually near some of the more well-to-do neighborhoods in the area. The complete lack of 2WIRE’s in my neighborhood, however, tells me that they probably don’t run DSL out to us. Looks like I’m stuck with (ugh) Liberty for a while longer.
One nice surprise was running across a free, open wifi network apparently being broadcasted from the basketball court/what passes for a civic center in this neighborhood. I’ll have to slow down and actually connect to it one of these days. And i’ll definetly leave WiFiFoFum running on Monday when I drive back into the Metro Area. Ought to be interesting. ![]()
